Master of Science Degree Requirements

The following requirements are the School of Industrial Engineering Requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of all Graduate College requirements and deadlines listed on the Graduate Bulletinexternal link - opens in new window.

General Requirements

The following requirements are applicable to all options for the MS IE degree. There are also specific requirements for thesis and non-thesis options.

  1. No more than 6 hours of the coursework counted toward the degree may be 4000 level courses. These courses must be previously approved for graduate credit. No 3000 level courses or below may be counted toward the degree.
  2. If necessary, a transfer credit evaluation must be completed during the first semester of enrollment. Students may obtain the evaluation form from the IE office. Transfer credit shall not exceed 25% of the credit hours applied to the MS IE degree. Transfer credit must carry a grade of "A", "B", or "S" and must not be more than six years old at the time of admission. The Office of Admissions, the Graduate College, and the School of Industrial Engineering must approve all transfer credit.
  3. Computer programming and oral and written English communication skills are assumed. Deficiencies in these areas must be removed through additional coursework or other means acceptable to the IE Graduate Committee.
  4. The student is responsible for fulfilling all requirements of the Graduate College Bulletin in effect at the time of admission to the IE graduate program.

For Thesis Option Only

Students planning to earn a master’s degree, thesis option must satisfy the following requirements in addition to the general requirements.

  1. The student must complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) credit hours of coursework at the graduate level with at least 15 hours in Industrial Engineering. At least one of the listed courses must be completed in at least three of the four areas:
    • Statistical Analysis
IE 5523 or IE 5553 or IE 5573
    • Human Factors/Ergonomics
IE 5813 or IE 5833 or IE 5843
    • Operations Research
IE 5613 or IE 5623 or IE 5643
    • Production and Manufacturing
IE 5303 or IE 5323 or IE 5563
  2. Up to 9 hours of coursework may be selected as non-IE electives. Both the IE and non-IE elective courses must be listed in the Graduate Catalog, approved by the advisor, and cannot be required courses in the current IE undergraduate curriculum. A representative list of approved electives is available from the School.
  3. The Graduate Liaison of the School of Industrial Engineering will serve as the academic advisor for each student unless the student is assigned another Industrial Engineering Faculty member to direct the program of study or has obtained a thesis advisor. The student shall meet with the academic advisor prior to registration each semester. The student is responsible for obtaining the student file from the School, bringing the file to the academic advising meeting, and ensuring the academic advisor updates the file with all academic advising notes.
  4. It is the responsibility of the thesis-option student to obtain a thesis advisor from the Industrial Engineering faculty. The thesis advisor will work with the student to develop an IE Plan of study, identify a thesis topic and to select a thesis committee. The thesis committee consists of a thesis advisor from the Industrial Engineering faculty and a minimum of two other faculty members from the Industrial Engineering faculty.
  5. Each student must file an IE Plan of Study detailing the courses to be completed for the MS IE program during the second semester of residence. The thesis committee must approve the IE Plan of Study and research topic. Course requirements represent a minimum level of preparation. If the thesis committee determines that additional coursework is necessary to remove deficiencies, such coursework will be added to the student's program of study. Computer programming and oral and written English communication skills are assumed. Deficiencies in these areas must be removed through additional coursework or other means acceptable to the IE Graduate Committee and thesis committee.
  6. The student must complete at least 6 credit hours of thesis research under the direction of the thesis advisor. Once enrollment in thesis research begins, the student must maintain continuous enrollment in thesis research (minimum of 2 credit hours each regular semester - summer session excluded) until completion of the program of study. The continuous enrollment regulation will be waived for a student who is enrolled in at least 9 hours during a regular semester and is not working on the thesis during the semester. For specific enrollment requirements contact the Graduate College.
  7. Students are responsible for obtaining approval from the thesis advisor to submit the thesis document to the thesis committee and to schedule a thesis defense (oral exam). The thesis document must be turned into the committee two weeks prior to taking the thesis defense since any committee member may cancel the defense if sufficient time is not provided to review the document prior to the defense. Submittal of the thesis document and taking the thesis defense does not guarantee completion of the M.S. degree. The thesis committee will review the thesis document and evaluate the thesis defense for completeness. Any deficiencies identified by the thesis committee must be resolved before the student is allowed to graduate.
  8. The student is responsible for meeting the Graduate College requirements and deadlines for submission of the thesis and scheduling of the thesis defense. Failure to meet the Graduate College deadlines will lead to a delay in graduation. Students are to refer to the Graduate Collegeexternal link - opens in new window and the Provostexternal link - opens in new window for deadlines and other pertinent information.

For Non-Thesis Option Only

Students planning to earn a master’s degree, non-thesis option must satisfy the following requirements in addition to the general requirements.

The Engineering Management program enables students to learn advanced IE techniques and provides students the opportunity to study management practices and advanced business skills.  This option is restricted to those students who have an undergraduate degree in engineering.

A non-thesis degree is considered a “terminal” degree and, in general, will not qualify the student for admission into a Ph.D. program. Students are encouraged to apply for the thesis option in the MS program if they are considering a Ph.D.

  1. The student must complete twenty-four (24) credit hours of coursework in Industrial Engineering at the graduate level and 10 credit hours of MBA coursework for a total of 34 credit hours at the graduate level.  Specific curriculum requirements are stated below.
  2. The Graduate Liaison of the School of Industrial Engineering will serve as the academic advisor for each student unless the student is assigned another Industrial Engineering faculty member to direct the program of study. The student shall meet with the academic advisor prior to registration each semester. The student is responsible for obtaining the student file from the School, bringing the file to the academic advising meeting, and ensuring the academic advisor updates the file with all academic advising notes.
  3. During the second semester of coursework, each student must file an IE Plan of Study detailing the courses to be completed for the MS IE program.
